《悲惨世界》从小说到舞台再到银幕的琐碎历程概述，纪录片整体剪的很乱。雨果写此著作时常年待在偏远英属海峡群岛，为了时刻捕捉灵感，每天脱光衣服裸体坐在桌前，这让登门拜访的友人震惊。制作的音乐剧取得空前成功持续二十多年经久不衰，扮演伽弗洛什的小演员后来又去演马吕斯。电影采用了音乐剧版本的音乐，海瑟薇的母亲曾是芳汀的巡演替角。休出演冉阿让时瘦了三十磅，出场戏之前连续36小时不喝水以求形象效果。演员们起初在片场唱歌也会难为情。后来派对上都要来两嗓子哈哈。
